AXCELL+: Reducing Municipal Surcharges for Food and Beverage Producers

AXCELL+ has been successfully applied to reduce and eliminate municipal surcharges based on elevated BOD, TSS, FOG, and other factors for food and beverage producers. Even with limited retention in the system, the increased activity of the biological "engine" has offered clients substantial savings.
Case Study: Tom's Snack Foods, Perry, Florida
The Challenge
Tom's Snack Foods in Perry, Florida had a single-stage aerated lagoon system. They were receiving considerable surcharges, about $8,000 per month, as their system discharged into the city collection system. The aeration consisted of a centrally located 25 HP aerator with four 12.5 units spaced near the perimeter. This system had odor issues and maintained a considerable inventory of odor control chemicals onsite.
The Solution
Our approach was to apply AXCELL+ at a single point, dosing it at the lift station prior to the flow entering the lagoon.
The Results
- Surcharges were dramatically cut shortly after dosing began
- Odors were eliminated
- Experimentation with aeration rates resulted in over 60% reduction of prior needs, providing cost savings on electricity
- Surcharges eventually averaged less than $500 per month
Long-term Outcomes
Tom's was later acquired by Lance Foods, who eventually constructed a manual treatment plant for this operation.
Additional Success Stories
AXCELL+ has been successfully applied in various food production facilities, including:
- Pickled goods producers
- Citrus processing plants
- Snack food manufacturers
- Soft drink producers
These clients have benefited from the addition of biologicals and aeration to improve limited bacteria and dissolved oxygen levels in their treatment systems.
The product is effective even with limited retention times.
